“So where are you? It's been a little while”
This is Paul Meany’s voice in a very distorted way. He is also a backing vocal in 2 other songs in the album, “Levitate” and “Pet Cheetah”. “Lovin' what I'm tastin', venom on my tongue, dependant at times, poisonous vibration, help my body run” Chlorine is incredibly toxic, enough that drinking it can be fatal. The lyrics come off as if to say Tyler is struggling with his suicidal thoughts again but it seems to be toying with it instead so it doesn’t take control. It’s used to disinfect, which means he may be drinking it to “disinfect” the negative thoughts he’s having.Venom has been shown in research to be addictive meaning that Tyler still depends on the feeling he gets from drinking it. Tyler has repeatedly said that music, helps him stay alive but it creates a burden on him because making it is so stressful. Sound waves are made from “vibrations” which means he could have used this to refer to his music as “poisonous vibrations” Tyler had just stated that “poisonous vibrations help my body run”. Chlorine is incredibly toxic so it’s ironic that it helps him instead of killing him. “Fall out of formation, I plan my escape from walls they confined, rebel red carnation, grows while I decay” Twenty One Pilots never follows the recommendations of the music industry as if to say the industry wants them in a line to be controlled like an army but Tyler writes his own thing meaning he “falls out of formation”. “Red carnation” means deep love and affection and was also a symbol of Portugal’s Carnation Revolution where the government was overthrown which links straight to overthrowing Dema and fight it which adds “rebel” to the lyric. “Had you in my coat pocket, where I kept my rebel red, I felt I was invincible, you wrapped around my head, now different lives I lead, my body lives on lead, the last two lines may read incorrect until said, the lead is terrible in flavor, but now you double as a papermaker, I despise you sometimes, I love to hate the fight and you in my life is like” Here we hear the term “rebel red” for the second time in the song. The bishops wear red robes with hoods as a symbol of authority to those in Dema. In the Chlorine music video, Tyler is wearing headphones which links to the lyric “you wrapped around my head”. He says time and time again music helps him and he takes the headphones out of his pocket “where I keep my rebel red”. The headphones “wrap around his head’ delivering the chemical he depends on. Tyler depends on songwriting to keep him going and to write you need a pencil or “lead”. His “body lives on lead” because he depends on this “chemical” of music and songwriting to stay alive. When he was younger he would write music to cope and now he makes money off of it which explains the line “doubles as a paper maker” meaning cash. “Let the vibe, let the vibe, let the vibe, let the vibe, beat is a chemical, yeah, let the vibe, let the vibe, let the vibe, let the vibe, moment is medical, yeah...x2” “Beat is a chemical” further strengthens the idea that the “beat” being music is an addictive “chemical” that keeps him alive and keeps him going. Twenty One pilots took a hiatus and this part of the song is probably referring to it. He allows his fans to listen to other music when he sings “don’t save my seat”. It can also be a message to the bishops of dema, he says in another song “When I’m out of dema, don’t expect me back bishops”. “I'm so sorry, I forgot you, let me catch you up to speed, I've been tested like the ends of a weathered flag that's by the sea” Tyler then talks to us in this part of the song singing “I’m so sorry I forgot you”. He knows that we were shocked when the hiatus happened and slot of us panicked that we wouldn’t have this “chemical” to cope with our pains. “Let me catch you up to speed” refers to the difficulties he has gone through in the past year and what has gone on with Clancy’s journey and how Dema has tested him and his faith. He refers to being tested and going through these difficulties as “a weathered flag that’s by the sea”. He tells us that he is the flag and the difficulties are the storm that has tested the flag. He brings back his doubts about religion in this part by bringing up a flag because a flag means something and after storms, the flag is torn apart meaning he is torn on his religion. “Can you build my house with pieces?, I'm just a chemical...x4” I think this part is sung by Ned, a fictional character created by Tyler. In the video Ned lives a house made of pieces, a major part being a car door, which is a recurring theme in twenty One Pilots history. Ned is asking Tyler to build him a house with pieces of his memory of his life and lyrics.
